Physical science demonstrations prove important facts about our atmosphere

New School 6th graders watched TNSM teacher Nancy Buchman’s physical science demonstrations dealing with atmosphere.  With 2 balloons balanced on a yard stick, Nancy was able to show the students that our air has mass by seeing what happened to to the once-balanced balloons when one pops.

Fire is only possible in the presence of oxygen. Nancy did a demonstration to show students that our air has about 20% oxygen.  When the candle flame within the upside down flask had burned all the oxygen within and extinguished itself, the water in the tray beneath rose to take its place. The water filled the flask until it was about 1/5 full which is 20%.
