6th Graders Design Homes for Dr. Seuss and Picasso

Have you ever wondered about the shape of Picasso’s house or wanted to see the interior decorating and gardens of Dr Seuss’ home? Well then, stay tuned…because TNSM art teacher Robin Hartmann’s sixth graders are taking part in an architectural project called DESIGN LAB: Learn and Build. They have broken into “Team Picasso” and “Team Seuss” and will dream up home and garden designs those men might have enjoyed living in. Elementary Woods River Project

  As the piles of snow melt, a wonderful play and learning opportunity is created for our merry band of civil engineers. They built dams and rivers, helping the water make its way to the lowest point of the Elementary Woods.

TNSM teacher Jennifer Frank introduced the kindergarten class to many artists and their interests throughout their artist careers. You’ll see student work in the slide show below inspired by Picasso’s blue period and his works dealing with shapes. You’ll see other work inspired by Degas, Sylvette David, and Seurat. The students’ work will be on display this week in the Preprimary Art Room.

Kindergartners write their own play and perform it.

The kindergarten class created their own script, costumes, set and songs for their play called Keep the Earth Clean. In the process, the students practiced concepts of social responsibility and stewardship of the Earth.

Students learned what’s involved in making maple syrup.

Students in (6-9) took a field trip to the Cincinnati Nature Center. They examined squirrel tracks as they walked from tree to tree gathering buckets of sap from the taps. They pushed their barrel of tree drippings through the woods on a big wagon and brought it to the building where the sap is boiled from a dilute sugary mixture into the thick sugary mix we call maple syrup. It takes a very long time to make maple syrup, and the students enjoyed observing and helping throughout the whole process.      

Study of Weather and Atmosphere

Photos by Maya T. In their study of weather, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students learned what gasses are in our atmosphere and the different layers of our atmosphere. For this demonstration, teacher Nancy Buchman poured liquids of various densities into the glass container to show how the gasses in our atmosphere are more concentrated at lower altitudes than higher ones.

TNSM Makes “Empty Bowls” for Upcoming Event

The New School Montessori is joining others throughout the world to raise funds and awareness for hunger-fighting organizations by hosting an Empty Bowls event. TNSM elementary students will create, glaze and fire clay bowls for use during the event. Ximena Flores, our Spanish teacher who is also an accomplished potter and artist, will lead the students in creating a bowl that will be sold in an “Empty Bowls” event.  Guests are invited to a simple meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a cash donation, guests are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in …
