Grandparents/Special Friends Night - Parent Participation

Grandparent and Special Friends Day is a time when students of all ages enjoy sharing their school with relatives, neighbors and friends. It is not an event with a presentation or formal tours. Instead, it’s a time where the children can take relatives or family friends through a typical day, showing them some of their favorite works, where they eat lunch, the woods, etc. Classroom teachers are available to answer any questions that may arise.

Montessori in Motion @ TNSM Growing Room
Mar 7 @ 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm

You are welcome to attend our daytime or evening presentations of (6-9) dance, (9-12) dance and music  in our Growing Room. Students have been working hard and have much to share.

As a certified Dunham teacher, Jeanne Speier shares rich cultural and social dancing heritage from Haiti and Africa with New School students.

We are grateful to have Jeanne Speier on our staff. She’s spent years studying dance in Bali and from Katherine Dunham herself. Katherine Dunham was a dancer, choreographer, anthropologist and humanitarian who developed a modern dance technique based on the primitive rhythms she experienced in Haiti and Africa. Dunham and her dance company performed in 52 different countries, in movies and on Broadway before settling in East St Louis where TNSM dance teacher Jeanne Speier studied with her.

In the video below, you will see students dancing with a blend of Dunham dance movements like Nagu and Haitian rocking horse.

In the video below, students are doing the African welcoming dance that moves into the Yonvalu which is a Haitian snake dance.

TerraNova Test Grades 3rd-5th
Mar 13 – Mar 17 all-day

Children in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade spend a portion of each day this week taking a section of the TerraNova Test. This is the only standardized test given during the year.

Taking the TerraNova serves as a practical life tool but also identifies student performance toward mastery of specific content objectives. It’s important to note that children’s academic progress is based on a number of factors that include, but are not limited to, the TerraNova test alone.
