Students make elephant toothpaste from hydrogen peroxide, dish soap and yeast

New School Montessori students in (9-12) have been studying molecular compounds. They created their own version of what they call elephant toothpaste – a foamy concoction made from hydrogen peroxide, dish soap, and yeast.   The yeast acts as a catalyst and breaks the hydrogen peroxide H2O2 into H2O (water) and oxygen. The oxygen gas mixed with the soap and produced a bubbly gas that overflowed the flask. This is an easy and fun demonstration to do at home with adult supervision.

Studying neighborhood chickens

Chickens up close! New School Montessori non-nappers took a brief field trip through the preprimary fence to our neighbor’s backyard chicken coop. TNSM 4th grader, Henry, and his mom Melissa gave a very informative presentation.

Creative drawings of molecules

Students’ study of atoms led them into the study of molecules.  As part of an assignment, they created a drawing of either water (H20) or carbon dioxide (CO2).  It’s fun to see them add their own sense of humor and artistic talent to their drawings.

Who Am I?

Each Halloween, New School Montessori elementary students dress as famous characters from history or literature, and we identify them through spoken clues about their lives. Also, the 6th graders share their love of anatomy in a “D’em Bones” song that lists bones from (head) parietal bone… to (toe) the distal phalange. You may recognize Mary Poppins, Cleopatra, Stan Lee, Rosa Parks, Sally Ride, Dorothy, Susan B. Anthony, Fly Guy and more.

Healthy, Halloween Treats

Many thanks to New School Montessori parents Jenny Miller, Alison Deardon, Missy Schade and Kristen Kreft for their clever, healthy Halloween snacks and to our staff for creating fun stations with activities and crafts.

TNSM Orchestra created a perfect Halloween soundtrack to spooky tale

New School Montessori Director Jeff Groh narrated a Halloween tale while the orchestra and beginning strings provide the soundtrack of raindrops, whistling wind, squeaking doors and pounding hearts. Our Mitchell Mansion – with its gargoyles and turret looked the part – as did the students who dressed their instruments and themselves in spooky outfits. We had our own little “Hogwarts” as the backdrop for several songs played from the Harry Potter movie. TNSM is pleased to have 28 elementary students in its strings program. Strings teacher, Melissa Robinson (former NKU Director of Strings) does a wonderful job with the children. …

Chef Combo is back!

TNSM teacher Debbie Weinstein will soon begin her afternoon lessons with non-nappers and kindergartners 3 days a week. Mondays – Debbie and Lydia will be working with kindergartners on geography. Their first country to explore will be Australia. Wednesdays – Debbie and Emily will present Chef Combo to non-nappers. Chef Combo is a puppet who cooks, sings and will be teaching his first recipe using celery, peanut butter and raisins to create the culinary favorite – ants on a log. Fridays – Debbie and Margaret will study physical science with kindergartners. Their first lessons will cover acids and bases, magnets, and the …

Firefighters answered questions and showcased their equipment

The Cincinnati Fire Department (CFD) came to The New School Montessori to observe our fire drill. They graciously stayed to answer questions and to demonstrate to our preschoolers how the ladder truck can save people in times of trouble. Many thanks to the CFD for their extra efforts for our children.

The New School Montessori Rocks’ karaoke night was so much fun!

Alumni, staff, parents and friends joined together in raising important funds for scholarships. Last year’s TNSM Rocks winner, Donte Tribble passed the award to Jackie Wilson who rocked “Uptown Funk.” Many thanks to: Northside Tavern, Genevieve and the Giant Peach, Lydia’s On Ludlow, Sexy Time Live Band Karaoke, our guest celebrity judge Angie Abiyah Rawers – and to all of you for your support and enthusiasm!
