Alumni Updates for Fall 2016 Newsletter

Ethan Goodman (’96) recently celebrated his 4th wedding anniversary with his husband, Steven. They live in San Diego, California and are starting their adoption process very soon. Ethan graduated from Miami University of Ohio and is a hair stylist at a salon and loves it! Ethan wrote, “I miss The New School very much. I wish San Diego had a school as good as The New School out here for our children.”   John Fleischman, TNSM alumni parent from the 90s, took a stroll down “Memory Lane,” had a tour and enjoyed a wonderful lunch with preprimary students. Self portraits of 4th-6th graders

Our theme this year is, “Unique. Just Like You.” We chose this theme because it celebrates both the individual and the relationship we have with others. Throughout the year, students will consider this theme in their work. This week, students in 4th- 6th grade created self portraits that demonstrate their uniqueness.

Kindergartners learn about Vincent Van Gogh

Preprimary art teacher, Ryonen Ignatius, introduced  the children to the life and work of Vincent Van Gogh. When looking at the Starry Nights painting, students pointed out Van Gogh’s unique swirling brush stokes, and one child observed, ” I love the way the wind curls up like waves.”

Matter changing from one state to another

Students in 4th through 6th grade began their chemistry lesson by talking about the 3 states of matter (solid, liquid, and gas) and how matter can change from one state to another. They created a gas by mixing baking soda and vinegar in a water bottle and then watched the newly-formed carbon dioxide fill the balloon. Students then used frozen carbon dioxide (dry ice) and learned that through sublimation, it can change from a solid state to a gaseous state.

Shawn Dougherty joins our Preprimary Program

I’m so happy to be returning to the (3-6) program at TNSM after a 10-year retirement. This lovely school has stayed firmly in my heart. The nearly 23 years I spent in the South Room represent the majority of my teaching career. My husband, Gary, and I feel blessed that the lives of each of our three children, and our oldest grandson have been supported and informed in beautiful ways by the time they have spent at TNSM. It will be my great pleasure to work with Caroline and Emily, this year’s North Room team. As we put our collective heads …
