Students create masks in art class

Students in elementary art are making masks and painting them in unique ways. Their masks will be on display during our Open House on Sunday, April 24 from 2-4. Students enjoyed a Music Salon party at teacher Andrea Warnken’s home

At our auction this year, parents and staff donated 23 different community parties . Music teacher Andrea Warnken hosted a music salon party last weekend where students brought their instruments and favorite songs to sing while Andrea accompanied on piano. Later, they took a tea and cookies break and hiked some trails in Mt. Storm.

Comparing and contrasting the characteristics of quadrilaterals

Tatum and Silas compared and contrasted the characteristics of quadrilaterals. Which ones have four equal side? Which ones have opposite sides that are equal and parallel? If you’d like a geometry refresher, TNSM teacher Nancy Buchman invites you to stop in to ask a 4th grader.

(9-12) Students studied sound with Geeker Speaker and instruments

Students in (9-12) studied sound in their science lesson. Owen brought in his little brother’s Geeker Speaker which turns almost any surface into a speaker and makes sound waves visible. Owen filled a small container with sand and placed the speaker under it to allow the students to see the effect of sound waves vibrating. The study of sound continued, when later, Owen and Brando brought in their guitars and created their own kind of cool sound waves for the Annex Students. Rachmaninoff piece played by TNSM alumna

Alumna Maggie Leahy came back to TNSM and wowed the Extended-Day students with her piano performance of a Rachmaninoff work. Maggie graduated from TNSM in 2013 and is now a 9th grader at Walnut Hills High School. Maggie has been playing piano for 11 years and practices about one hour each day. She also plays the cello, and is an accomplished ballerina.

School House Symphony played “Peter and the Wolf”

School House Symphony, Inc. came to The New School today and performed for our preprimary students. While children listened to the story of Peter and the Wolf, the musicians played the famous musical phrases to signify that the wolf was near or that Grandfather was coming. We all had a terrific time and thoroughly enjoyed Sergei Prokofiev’s longtime favorite.

Impromptu Yoga

We offer a number of after-school yoga clubs for New School students of all ages. How fun that these students decided to practice their yoga poses during recess. We love our students! Comment on video from alumni student Elice van Woensel (’09): “My time at TNSM taught me so much, including a love for yoga. I am so glad to see other TNSM students learning and appreciating yoga.”  

Adult Community Parties

Community Parties at The New School Montessori are a longstanding tradition. It’s a fun way to fundraise and to get to know one another better. The process begins in late fall when parents and alumni families donate community parties as an auction gift. These parties are revealed on auction night where auction attendees have the first opportunity to sign up and donate their admission fee (for the party) to the school. We had a great time at the Contemporary Arts Center this year. We enjoyed the new spaces in our venue, The Contemporary Arts Center. We listened to live music during the silent auction played by Midwestern Swing. The Sleepy Bee prepared our appetizers and dinner. Chase Public Short Order Poetry interviewed interested partygoers and wrote a unique poem for them while they waited. Alumni parent Casey Coston served as DJ for after-auction dancing.
