The Cincinnati Zoo’s traveling naturalist, Joan, has visited The New School Montessori non-nappers 3 times in the past 30 days! We are so grateful for her visit and for the wealth of information she shares about the animals. Recently she brought a snake, a hedgehog, and a tree frog.
Experiencing the challenges of drawing upside down (Sistine Chapel-style)

Calculating square roots using the Montessori Stamp Game
Sixth graders learned to form the square root of numbers using the Montessori Stamp Game. These materials allow students to calculate square roots using concrete materials – a skill very few people know how to do – so that they more fully understand the concept.
Fifth graders are balancing equations in algebra
Fifth-grade students continue to practice solving algebraic equations using Montessori bead bars and pawns that represent the Xs in the equation. In order to keep the equation in balance, they have to remove the same value from each side of the equation. Students are also learning the steps of recording and checking their work on paper.
A number of our staff were able to attend the AMS Conference

She’s spent years studying dance in Bali and from Katherine Dunham herself. Katherine Dunham was a dancer, choreographer, anthropologist and humanitarian who developed a modern dance technique based on the primitive rhythms she experienced in Haiti and Africa. Dunham and her dance company performed in 52 different countries, in movies and on Broadway before settling in East St Louis where …
