Students study various properties of sound

For the students’ unit on sound, they poured different amounts of water in cylinders to see how the amount of liquid affected the pitch.

To feel the vibrations created by sound, each student made a kazoo from a plastic straw. Students also experimented with sound by talking into a can connected to another by a string. When the string was taut, the sound vibrated across the string and carried the sound to a waiting ear.

One can make a noise with a moistened finger drawn around the rim of a glass because the vibrations of the glass are transmitted to the air, creating a sound.
