Rock, Paper, Scissors in the Electronic Age

Students in (9-12) have been learning about circuits wired in parallel and in series and the differences between them. Teacher Nancy Buchman demonstrated these principles using holiday lights.

Several students (Luka, Chris and Tim) were interested in learning more about electricity and took on an extended challenge of creating a modern version of the Rock/Paper/Scissors game. Their project required that they assemble their materials, drill holes, tighten screws and then “wire and rewire” the system following the schematic drawing below. It took many tries to get the hierarchy of “rock-beats-scissors” and “paper-beats-rock” to be wired correctly so that once each of the 2 players flipped his chosen lever, a light would only illuminate for the winner.

To me the schematic below looks like a traffic jam on I-75, but the students understood it and even explained that they needed a power source, a load and a path for the electrons to travel on.
