As an independent, non-profit school, we have created a community that understands the importance of small class sizes, nutritious lunches, Montessori principles, and a relationship with our families and students that makes it clear we are not just educating the “whole child,” but rather, EVERY unique child. I wanted to take a moment to share why it is so important to give. Each year, The New School Montessori relies on donations from families, staff, friends and alumni to offset tuition, facility upkeep, classroom programming, scholarship opportunities, and teacher salaries.
You might be thinking, “Parents already pay tuition, why should I also give to our Annual Giving Campaign?” According to the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), tuition and fees make up 90% of the total operating budget of most private schools. This statistic is in line with The New School Montessori. This year, TNSM has a $1.6 million operating budget, which requires us to offer several fundraisers to raise roughly $150,000 to meet the needs of staff, students and our campus. NAIS reports that the median tuition and fees for member schools is $19,599 with the median expense per student being $20,768. At TNSM our average tuition is $11,450, however, our cost per student is roughly $13,000.
In order to fill that gap, we rely on multiple fundraisers throughout the year that bring the community together in fun and exciting ways to help support the school. Our Annual Giving Campaign is a call to current families, staff, friends and alumni to support the school through a variety of different leveled-giving opportunities and corporate matches. Our goal is $40,000, which I am delighted to say we surpassed last year with 100% participation of staff and board and a record-breaking 93% participation of current families!
