“Adversity does not build character, it reveals it.”

Hello Friends,

One year ago today, TNSM went remote due to COVID-19. This year has revealed the strength of character our community has. Each of you is truly a hero. With humor and courage, our staff took on risk and the unsettling emotions that change evokes. Our families revealed patience, flexibility, and trust – time and again – as we responded to all of the challenges a pandemic introduces. But most of all, our students (your children) demonstrated a depth of character that inspired us all to be our best.

Our students showed us how to be joyful in compromise, how to respond to change in the same way that water works its way around a stone, how bravery is emboldened by friendship, how play is essential – even when times are hard. I watched a hundred webinars this year on how to respond to a global pandemic; and yet, some of the most valuable lessons I learned were from watching children at recess.

We will never forget this year. It has not been easy and some have encountered true hardship. None of us, however, will look back without remembering someone who reached out in a moment of need, someone who helped lift a burden, someone who made us laugh or sat beside us in a moment of grief.

And although the pandemic is not over, it seems that we have made it through the worst part of it together as a community.

  1. Jeff — I always find your commentary refreshing, inspiring and relevant. I can’t tell you how often I pass by the Ginkgo House and see an entire class out in the front yard focused on their studies —not just when weather is nice and everyone wants to be outside anyway. These are wintery days when temperatures are cold, the wind is blustery, the skies are overcast and everyone is out there wearing coats, hats and gloves — totally engaged in their work. The dedication and endurance consistently demonstrated is remarkable —and speaks well of the school, the students and the entire TNS community. Very admirable. Thanks for all you do.
