Food and sustainability report, Johnny Appleseed Day and more

Food and Sustainability teacher, Beth Canarie, is delighted to have weeded garden beds and new mulch. She sends a huge thank you to all the parents and children who came out for our fall cleanup day.

Students have completed a late planting of parsley, kale, basil and dill for Chef Audrey to use in the delicious home-cooked lunches she prepares for us each day. As a school, we are composting to create nutrient-rich soil for our garden and all levels are learning about the science behind gardening. Preprimary students read a book with Beth about roots and seeds and had a follow-up taste-testing session with blueberries, sweet yellow peppers and tomatoes!

September 26th is Johnny Appleseed Day! Students will be taste-testing a variety of apples.  If you run across any unusual apple varieties please bring some  in with the name of the apple and where you located it.  Audrey will create a special apple dessert for us that week!

If you have any extra spring bulbs to donate for students in (6-9) to plant, it would be great to send those in. We have many eager young gardeners who are looking forward to planting them on our campus.

As our program is new, Beth Canarie is in need of some items for the young gardeners.  Here is her wish list:
  • trowels
  • small metal diggers
  • Lil Hog Shovels (perfect size for the kids)
  • rakes
  • clippers
  • twine
  • wagon
  • wheel barrow
