Hut Tour at TNSM

Many times elementary students use their recess time in the elementary woods to create huts from logs and sticks. Enjoy your tour as you see the rewards of a well-thought-out group project.

Pancakes and Poetry May 10 (8:30-11:30AM)

Please join us for a hearty breakfast of pancakes, fruit ,turkey sausage and eggs served by TNSM 4th, 5th and 6th grade students. This is a perfect  opportunity to invite friends and family to experience TNSM. Join the students in their study of classic poetry as they perform live readings in the Gallery space of the Enrichment Center and share a favorite poem or your own original work in an “Open Mic.” Families are also invited to the Art Room of the Enrichment Center to turn words into tangible art to take home. Storyteller Visits (6-9) Classrooms

In an effort to continue growing our community’s appreciation for the diversity we all share, the (6-9) students welcomed former TNSM parent Adele Johnson-Kebe’s friend, Freda Crane. An Islamic author, Freda visited the (6-9) classrooms to share stories from her book Ayat Jamilah: Beautiful Signs – A Treasury of Islamic Wisdom for Children and Parents. Freda is an educator who has travelled widely, collecting Muslim literature in China, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Malaysia among others. The children really enjoyed her presentation of the story, “The Famous Donkey” and had lots of questions for her.

Kindergartners enjoyed their field trip to Greenacres.

The kindergartners have been studying the winter and spring equinox (meaning equal night) when the the earth’s orientation to the  sun gives us 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night. They visited Greenacres during the winter equinox and have returned to experience the customs of a spring equinox. The presentation at Greenacres included a story about how insects celebrated spring and also a description of how cultures around the world celebrate the spring equinox by sprouting grains in a dish to represent rebirth, by gathering eggs and by feasting on berries.   The kindergartners have been studying many famous artists. Their recent art show displayed works inspired by Lautrec, Monet, Picasso and more. Now they’re getting inspiration from Degas’ dancers and through the magic of pipe cleaners and foil, have captured the movement and grace of the human form.

You will have the opportunity to see what a Balinese dance class looks like. Students will share a Balinese welcome dance, a rice farmer dance, a hand dance and an excerpt from the famous Kecak dance which is based on an Indian epic poem the Ramayana.
