New School Montessori preprimary students made it rain Elmer’s glue as they prepared their April calendars with teachers Emily Broderick and Caroline Davis.
From the binomial square to the binomial cube…
Having worked extensively with the binomial square, 6th graders are now using the Montessori cubing material to build a binomial cube. Each color corresponds to the bead bar colors they have been using for years.
“It’s like a carpet made of wild flowers!”
Preprimary students picked and studied wild flowers in their botany class with teacher Colleen Blumer. One student remarked, “It’s like a carpet made of wild flowers!” They learned about roots, shoots, leaves, buds, flowers, fruit and seeds. They read “Log Hotel” to discover how plant matter is broken down by decomposition. They then turned over rotten logs in our woods and met some of the creatures who help in that process!
Preprimary book shares student work and their memories of it
Teacher Shawn Dougherty shared student work in a book she created. She interviewed the children and recorded their thoughts as they looked back at the photos and told what they remembered. Here are a few pages from the section of the book called, “Care of Classmates.”

New School Montessori children in the (3-6) program have enjoyed seeing themselves, their words and their work documented in a book in the North Room classroom. Students in (9-12) conducted experiments to measure the presence of starch in foods.
In phy sci fun, students learned about carbohydrates and tested various foods for starches by putting a small bit of food in test tubes with water. The boiled water turned blue if starch was present. They learned that most fruits did not contain starch, but grains did.
4th and 5th grade students prepare for their upcoming overnight trip to Columbus
4th and 5th grade New School Montessori students are studying the three branches of Ohio government to help prepare for their upcoming trip to Columbus. 6th grade students prepared a Civil Rights timeline
New School Montessori 6th graders spent some time studying and writing papers on numerous Civil Rights events. They presented their projects to the class and created a timeline together. The students remarked about how sad they were to hear what terrible things the African American community endured. They said they knew it had been a bad time, but they hadn’t realized how very terrible it was, how cruel, and that it wasn’t that long ago. Mirabelle studied Rosa Parks and admired her bravery. She was proud that Ms. Parks had let people know that women can stand up for rights too. Mirabelle said, …
New School students met Bruce Harris and learned about the importance of participating in their community
Speaker Bruce Harris shared his experiences of being blind from birth with New School elementary students. At the age of 6, a surgery restored much of Bruce’s vision, and he became a big fan of color. He enjoys attending Albuquerque’s International Balloon Fiesta where hundreds of colorful hot air balloons fill the sky. Bruce adds color to children’s lives by leading puppet shows at the Interfaith Hospitality Network. Bruce still struggles with vision problems, but is happy to read the morning news to listeners in his Cincinnati Association for the Blind radio program. Bruce coaches an after-school debate team …
