The art of letter writing is alive and well in the Annex

Last week 4th graders each wrote a friendly letter to the person of their choosing. They also learned how to properly address the envelopes. Most students chose a relative; one student wrote to a teacher, one to a friend, and one wrote to his favorite soccer star in Germany. This week has brought some excitement as students have started receiving responses to their letters.

Non nappers celebrated the Chinese New Year

Audrey’s family visited the non-nappers to take part in the celebration of the Chinese New Year with teacher Debbie Weinstein’s class. Students made colorful lanterns, received a special Chinese New Year’s gift of paper money from Audrey’s parents, and were read to (in Chinese and English) by the family’s exchange-student-daughter from China. Many thanks for all that Audrey’s family brought to the celebration!

First grader, Eleanor, is on a mission to save chimpanzees.

Hi, I am Eleanor, a first grader at The New School Montessori. As you might know, I have a certain interest in Dr. Jane Goodall. I saw a video she shared about recycling cell phones and other devices. You can see the video below. I want to make it easy for everyone at TNSM to recycle their cell phone, smart phone, iPad, iPod or tablet. Starting this week, there will be a white box in the school foyer to drop off your old devices to be recycled. Once we have enough, I will ship the devices to the Jane Goodall …

Preprimary friends often read to each other in cozy corners

When teachers notice a student entering into a “sensitive period” for reading, they supply that student with materials that excite and challenge him or her. There are several children in preprimary who are already reading chapter books at a third-grade level. Children enter sensitive periods for all kinds of learning at different times. Our Montessori trained teachers see students through their own process. In addition to academics, the children continue to develop character traits of kindness, respect, grace and courtesy.

Ali, a kindergartner, works on division problems

Montessori math materials help students gain a rich and meaningful understanding of math by beginning with the “concrete” and moving toward the “abstract.”   Ali, a kindergartner, is using a division board to answer: 12 divided by 3 14 divided by 2 15 divided by 5 and more…

Using the Montessori decimal board…

Ingrid and Clo are using the yellow Montessori decimal board to read and write decimal numbers – not only to the tenths and hundredths, but also all the way to the millionths. The decimal board reinforces place value as students learn to add, subtract, multiply and compare decimal numbers.
