School Lunch Is Ready

I expect that when most children, and even adults, hear this phrase, “School lunch is ready!” their stomachs churn. And while efforts may exist to change the expectation at other schools (see links below), school lunch can be good, not to mention purposeful at The New School Montessori.

Since our beginning nearly 45 years ago, TNSM has chosen to offer its children, staff, and the occasional visiting parent a healthy, home-cooked lunch daily. At one time, children helped in the preparation of the meal, but today, our top-rate chef Audrey Cobb and TNSM kitchen assistant and school alumni Ryonen Ignatius do all the cooking. And they serve up delicious and nutritious meals.

The primary goal of the TNSM food program (included in tuition) is to provide children with an array of healthy food choices daily. While we allow children to make their food selections, we do also encourage tastings and will direct them to protein choices and other never-before-tried foods. With vegetarian options provided daily, children find plenty to eat and have adequate time to finish their lunch in the 45 minutes provided. Eating more slowly allows for better digestion, and it even allows for conversation to ensue. Once lunchtime is completed, the kids head outdoors for an opportunity to stretch their legs, as we believe that is important too.

So, here’s to good school lunches that nourish the mind and body.  They do in fact exist, and at least one – our own at TNSM – is revered by kids and adults alike.
