Our Community

Hello Friends,

Our Home
The New School Montessori has been serving children and families for 52 years. As an educator who has been a part of the Montessori community for over 20 years, part of which included traveling the country for 9 months, engaging with students and teachers, I have only become more confident that The New School Montessori is one of the best programs in the nation. Not only do we remain the only dually accredited school in the city, (Independent Schools of Associated Central States and the American Montessori Society) but the blended combination of our natural outdoor play areas, homemade lunches, gorgeous Mitchell Mansion, beautifully renovated Ginkgo House, and soon-to-be Kaleidoscope Center all help to provide a one-of-a-kind experience for children.

Our Lunch Program
The New School Montessori provides the best school lunch program in the city. Period. Our chefs (Audrey and JJ) prepare healthy, delicious, varied, thoughtful lunches for 150 students every day. From the cloth napkins and glassware in the (3-6), promoting attention and care while eating, to the practical life skills developed in our (6-12) as students participate in the set up and clean up of each lunch period – TNSM offers an unparalleled lunch experience for all – even parents who have an open invitation to join their student for lunch in the award-winning, beautifully designed Growing Room. Our Teachers and Staff

We also value and cherish our New School teachers and staff who work together to find what works best for each student. It is extremely rare to find a Montessori program with all teachers AND teacher assistants having Montessori certifications. In addition, the majority of our teachers have their master’s degree in education, along with a list of other training (Orton Gillingham, reading specialist certifications, etc) that, when combined with their years of experience, qualifies them as some of the best educators in the city.

Our Families
A seed was planted in 1970 when a group of families got together and started The New School. From that year to now, the families that choose TNSM share a set of values around social-emotional learning, peaceful conflict resolution, Montessori education, honoring the environment, embracing and creating fellowship with all walks of life, and respecting the child. Our family community understands that it “takes a village” to guide children into a future that requires empathy, creativity, courage, determination, and kindness. Our families model this through volunteerism, partnering with teachers, and helping other families in need.

2023/24 Academic Year
Next week our Assistant Director, Ceara Comstock, will be sending out re-enrollment contracts for the 23/24 academic year. We continue to experience waiting lists in (3-6) and (6-9) programs, and with this year’s addition of a fourth teacher in the (9-12), we look forward to growing that enrollment as we enter the next academic year! This year, TNSM has been experiencing rising costs in our lunch programs, insurance, and our routine facility maintenance. In addition to that, we continue to strive toward competitive salaries for our teachers and staff. Our tuition increases each year to account for cost of living increases and other influencing factors. In step with other independent schools over the last couple of years, we will be increasing our tuition (5.8%) to account for the above mentioned factors. Again, it is important to point out that with this increase in TNSM’s tuition remains lower than the actual cost per student to balance our operating budget.

Thank you for your partnership, support, and belief that our best chance for a better tomorrow is through raising resilient, kind, inclusive children who have an unquenchable thirst to learn.   Together, the future is bright.
Best,

Jeff Groh

Director
